Hong Kong has a small geographical environment but has to deal with a large amount of waste. We really need to know how to improve this situation. Hong Kong’s landfills will become full in the short term. Therefore, we must act now and shoulder the responsibility of reducing and recycling waste together.

Although the government plays a leading role in waste reduction, public participation is equally important. The “Hong Kong Resource Recycling Blueprint 2035” announced in February 2021, with the vision of “National Waste Reduction, Resource Recycling, and Zero Waste to Landfill”, proposes strategies, goals and measures to address waste management challenges until 2035.

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Products Producer Responsibility Scheme (Waste Electrical and Electronic Products Scheme) covering “four electrical appliances and one computer” products (i.e. air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, computers, printers, scanners and monitors, collectively referred to as “regulated electrical appliances”) ) was implemented in 2018. Starting from July 1, 2024, refrigerators with a total volume of no more than 900 liters, washing machines with a laundry capacity of no more than 15 kilograms, stand-alone clothes dryers and dehumidifiers will be included under the waste electrical appliance optimization plan. Under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Scheme, sellers of regulated electrical appliances are required by law to provide free statutory removal services to consumers by removing an electrical appliance of the same category from the premises requested by the consumer. When consumers purchase a new “four electrical appliances and one computer”, they can ask the seller to arrange for the delivery of new parts and the removal of old parts of the same category on the same day without any additional charges.
To properly recycle the “four electrical appliances and one computer”, in addition to the statutory free removal service plan arranged by the seller when purchasing regulated electrical appliances, the public can also use the following services:
Recycling hotline (2676 8888) / WhatsApp (6081 5096) – allows the public to make an appointment for free door-to-door recycling services from government WEEE·PARK operators.
Green in the district – the community recycling network will receive “four electricity and one computer” and transfer them to appropriate recyclers for proper disposal.
